Pre-purchasing a site and exercising your options
Friday, 1 June 2018
Over the last couple of blogs we’ve discussed pre-purchasing a burial or cremation site and some of the advantages this choice has when compared to purchasing ‘at need’. There are certainly some solid arguments for the savings that can be made and of course there’s peace of mind to be enjoyed knowing that you’ve ticked-off one more task in your end-of-life arrangements, even if you’re not planning to shuffle off this mortal coil for many years to come.
So with pre-purchasing taken care of, is it now just a matter of sitting back and watching your site increase in value? It almost certainly will be, but it can also be interesting to discuss some of the other scenarios that might crop up as the years roll by.
Can someone else make an offer on my site?
Perhaps you’ve chosen a particular site that other visitors to our cemetery notice and become interested in. Rest assured that your tenure of the site is an entirely private matter and that no enquiry will ever be directed to you by Adelaide Cemeteries Authority.
What if I change my mind?
From time to time, particularly in situations when family circumstances change, an individual might have a change of heart and decide to relinquish their site. That individual is welcome to contact the Adelaide Cemeteries Authority and notify us of their intention. Having done this, the current value of the site will be calculated, refunded to the individual, and paperwork will be taken care of in order to finalise the arrangement.
You’re always in control
At the time that you pre-purchase a site you will be asked to name the Interment Right Holder – this is normally the person who makes the purchase, but it can be any person that you elect at the time (usually a spouse or partner). The Interment Right Holder has the exclusive right to the use of the site, and it is very important that you are aware of this, because as years go by you need to always be certain of who has the final say when it comes to using the site. So it’s a good idea to stay in touch with us and keep us up to date on your situation if there are any significant changes in life that cause you to re-think who you wish the Interment Right Holder to be. Of course we are only too happy to spend the time discussing the situation with you so that you are always absolutely sure of where you stand.
We all like to have choices in life and pre-purchasing a cemetery site is a straightforward option that can save money and provide peace of mind. Taking care of your cemetery site in advance is a bit like having your house paid off – it’s a relief knowing that it’s done and is one more expense you won’t need to face in the future.
If you’d like to find out more about pre-purchasing, by all means phone 8139 7400 during business hours and ask to speak with one of our Memorial Consultants.
